Magic of Lanolin: Elevating Your Sleep Experience Naturally

Lanolin, a natural wax derived from sheep's wool, has found its place in the bedding world. We love lanolin for the wide range of benefits that go beyond traditional materials used in bedding, such as being dust mite resistant and temperature regulating. In this post, we'll explore the advantages of lanolin in bedding and how it can enhance your sleep experience.

What is Lanolin?

For millennia, humans have cherished lanolin and sheep’s wool for its varied benefits. Today, various products and technical applications extensively use this unique fiber.

Lanolin is secreted by the sebaceous glands in sheepskin, which makes it a naturally occurring substance and a renewable source. Its primary function is to coat and soften the wool fibers, providing protection against the elements.

Does All Wool Have Lanolin

Sheep are the only animal that produces Lanolin. Other wools, such as alpaca or camel wool, don’t produce this unique substance. All sheep’s wool contains a percentage of lanolin, but wool that is processed for use in bedding or clothing is often stripped of it during the cleaning process, while some retain a certain percentage. Typically, the more gentle and natural the cleaning process, the more lanolin is left in the wool. Check for lanolin percentages in product descriptions or contact the company to find out whether they retain some lanolin in their wool.

We retain 1% of the lanolin in our wool to retain its perfect ability to help give you a good night’s sleep.

Temperature Regulation: Lanolin's Natural Breathability

One of the standout features of bedding with lanolin is its natural breathability. Lanolin helps regulate temperature by allowing air to circulate, preventing overheating during warmer nights and providing warmth when temperatures drop. It's semi-permeable - meaning it allows skin to self-hydrate from within, but also acts as a breathable skin barrier. This inherent breathability has developed over hundreds of years of evolution, and ensures a comfortable and balanced sleep environment.

Moisture Management: Dry and Cozy All Night Long

Lanolin's moisture-wicking properties make it an excellent choice for bedding. It can absorb and release moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the night. Because of lanolin, wool fibers are hydrophilic on the inside but hydrophobic on the outside. This means that it can adsorb 30% of its weight in water without feeling wet, because the adsorbed water is trapped inside the fibers, while the outside of a wool fiber sheds water. So, even if it is soaked through, it will quickly dry off on the outside and feel dry to the touch, because the water is only held inside the fiber.

This is particularly beneficial for those who experience night sweats or live in humid climates, ensuring a restful and undisturbed sleep.

Hypoallergenic Comfort: Lanolin's Gentle Touch

For individuals with allergies or sensitive skin, natural wool bedding provides a hypoallergenic alternative. Lanolin naturally repels dust mites and other allergens, creating a healthier sleep environment. Despite its natural moisture content, wool's dry, porous nature repels mildew and dust mites, along with its unique barbed structure. The gentle and skin-friendly nature of lanolin ensures a soothing touch for even the most sensitive sleepers.

Durability and Longevity of Lanolin

Wool bedding infused with Lanolin tends to be more durable and long-lasting. Lanolin helps protect the fibers from wear and tear, just like its purpose for the sheep, ensuring that your bedding maintains its quality over time. This resilience contributes to a wise investment in bedding that stands the test of time.

Embrace the Comfort of Lanolin-Infused Bedding

Lanolin-infused bedding offers a unique combination of comfort, functionality, and sustainability. Whether you prioritize temperature regulation, moisture management, hypoallergenic properties, or durability, wool bedding with lanolin provides a holistic solution for a rejuvenating and tranquil sleep experience.
