Value in Furniture

Our sofas already meet the highest quality standards for conventional furniture including kiln-dried hardwood with mortise-tenon frame construction, jute web suspension with extra coir support, sturdy long-life natural latex cushions, and tightly woven durable fabrics.

Being a conscious company, we've gone one step further to ensure this sofa is the healthiest and most sustainable sofa we could offer. Every ingredient is certified to the highest standards to ensure no flame retardants, formaldehyde glue, polyester, polypropylene, polyurethane, fabric treatments, toxic stains, dacron batting, feathers, cardboard, metal coils, particle board, plywood or veneer are found in our sofas.

What does this mean for your family? You will enjoy cleaner air quality, reduced allergies, and reduced exposure to chemicals. Treated synthetic fabrics and petroleum-based foams infused with flame retardants, which have been linked to cancer, obesity, infertility and developmental brain disorders. These foams degrade over time into chemical-saturated dust that every person in the home breathes in or ingests (with infants and children absorbing the most).

This is truly lifetime furniture; an investment for your family, and an investment in your health, comfort, and style.

    Talalay Latex
Did you know that true latex comes from the sap of rubber trees? It actually undergoes a process to transform it into a squishy foam. Compared to the Dunlop processed latex found in our mattresses, the Talalay manufacturing process adds two steps—the latex is vacuum sealed and flash frozen—that are not used in the Dunlop process. The result is a natural latex with a very consistent cell structure and naturally “springy” feel. It is soft, supple, perfect for the daily comfort needed in a sofa or armchair.

    • Latex is produced from the sap of rubber trees
    • Natural Talalay latex process involves vacuum shaping and flash freezing
    • Certified in accordance with Oeko-Tex 100 and Cradle-to-Cradle GOLD certification
    • Sourced and processed in Sri Lanka

    Sustainable Maple Wood
The frame is hand built from solid hardwood harvested from sustainably managed forests in the Appalachian mountain range whose stewards practice responsible forest management and hold certifications to that effect. The solid frame is constructed using Mortise-and-tenon joinery.

    • Certification through Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers using sustainable forest management practices
    • Wooden Feet: choose natural unfinished wood, Zero VOC linseed oil or SCS Indoor Advantage Gold-certified low-VOC stain all of which are certified by SCS Global Services
    • All purpose glue is low VOC and has it's GREENGUARD Gold Certification
    • Wood sourced and processed: Appalachian Mountain Range, USA

    Jute Fiber
Fibers from the jute plant are used to make strong threads that can be stretched over furniture frames to form a webbing. The use of jute fiber is an age old tradition in the furniture industry. Jute plants are naturally environmentally friendly being easy to grow and having little need for pesticides and fertilizers. Rather than springs, natural jute webbing is used underneath the seat cushions and it is also wrapped over the wooden frame on the back as well as the inside of the arms.

    • Jute fiber comes from the stem and ribbon (outer skin) of the jute plant
    • Naturally environmentally friendly crop
    • Sourced and processed: countries of origin vary depending on supplier

    Coconut Coir
These fibers come from the husk of the coconut palm fruit. The durable fibers of 6-12" long can last up to 15-20 years. This lends them to be the perfect use for underneath the sofa decking. The coir is a natural by-product of harvesting the coconut fruit.

    • Coir fibers are from the coconut palm fruit's husk
    • Durable fibers last up to 15-20 years
    • Sourced and processed: countries of origin vary depending on supplier

It might not be the color green—maybe you prefer blue or white or brown. But your sofa should be green in another sense. It should be made of natural materials that are nontoxic, safe and healthful for you and every member of your family.

The bad news is, most sofas aren’t. They’re full of unnecessary chemicals that undermine your health. And the planet’s, too.

Why Are Organic Sofas So Great?

In search of a nontoxic, eco-friendly couch

Consumers are growing increasingly concerned about the quantities of toxic chemicals that are pumped into everyday products. Among the worst are chemical flame retardants, which have been linked to cancer, obesity, infertility, and developmental brain disorders such as ADHD and autism. They’re poisonous to the environment, too, found in outdoor air and even in Arctic wildlife.

The most widespread news about flame retardants (HBO’s Toxic Hot Seat documentary, Frontline's program on PBS, the Chicago Tribune’s award-winning investigation, The Human Experiment documentary and other reports) has focused on sofas. Like most mattresses, most sofas and similar upholstered furniture contain foams and fabrics that are loaded with toxic compounds—flame retardants, formaldehyde, pesticides and other “chemical soup” ingredients.

Ever notice a puff of air when you sit down on your couch? It’s full of microscopic dust particles that carry tiny doses of the chemicals the foam and other synthetic materials contain. You breathe them in, touch them, and even eat them—even in the cleanest home. Everyone is vulnerable to their long-term effects, but especially infants and children, who absorb five times more chemical exposures than adults do.

Scientists say the risk comes from chronic, low-dose, daily exposures, which is just what happens with ordinary use of your furnishings.

A luxury sofa shouldn’t poison you

Neither comfort nor decor should raise your risk of cancer and other serious diseases, and scientists have raised the alarm.

Under pressure from researchers and health activists, some furniture manufacturers have begun to remove the worst flame retardants from their sofas and similar products. But that’s only part of the toxic sofa story. Most upholstered furniture also contains many other dangerous substances that migrate into your home and body during the entire life of the product. These include formaldehyde-based adhesives, pesticide residues, nanoparticle fabric treatments, a wide variety of hormone-altering compounds, and high-VOC (volatile organic compound) finishes.

    A Better Option

When you choose our organic sofaloveseat or armchair, you’re choosing natural woolorganic fabrics, and latex that are durable and safe for your health. From natural latex foam to certified organic fabrics, certified sustainable solid hardwoods, natural jute webbing and zero-VOC finishes, our sofas bring new peace of mind to your home. They contain NO flame retardants, formaldehyde glues, cardboard, particle board, plywood, veneers or metal coils.

They’re stylish and elegant, too. No matter what color you choose—your green sofa will be beautiful.

    Sofa Care

    Protection Is Best

We offer armrest covers to help protect the heavy use areas.

In case of spills & accidents

      1. Gently spot clean the affected area.

      2. You can also treat the problem area with live cultured enzymes which eliminate odors. (i.e. Biokleen makes a product called Bac Out.) These enzyme products can be found at your local health food store/ co-op.

      Sofa Warranty

Our mattress partners offer fantastic finished products and warranties to back them up. Organic sofas are a relatively large investment and warranties are in place to help the purchaser, manufacturer and the distributor to be clear about coverage, quality and long term benefits to be had from this investment.

While reviewing the attached warranty information please keep these very important points in mind:

      • Retain a copy of your original receipt. Warranty claims can not be processed without the receipt.
      • If you notice a manufacturing defect, notify the manufacturer within 15 days of receipt.
      • If the item is damaged during shipping, note as much when signing the delivery receipt
      • The 5 year warranty only covers defects in the furniture, not including accidents or normal wear and tear.

Warranty: Sofa, Loveseat, and Arm Chair

Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable program Certified

Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. (AHMI) introduced the Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable program in 2007 to certify its members as producing, distributing and manufacturing goods from the region. Lumber certification is a complex issue that has multiple stakeholders from the individual landowner through the retailer of finished goods.

AHMI has researched and developed programs to assist its members in making decisions that benefit both the environment and individual operations. The research is based on the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Inventory Analysis which is compiled in each state by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. AHMI collects specific data from the 344 counties of the Appalachian Region from northern Georgia through western New York.

Natural wool is a timeless option for bedding. It’s actually been used for centuries. Our grandmothers knew the many benefits that wool provides, now you do too.

Why Is Wool Bedding So Great?

Wool is the most breathable filling material available, making it both cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It actually helps to regulate your body temperature.

Wool is a natural material; something grown, not made in a lab. Your body knows the difference. Wool surpasses synthetic fill in terms of quality and durability.

      Dust Mite Resistant
Wool is a great choice if dust mites bug you or if you’re allergic. Dust mites can't live in wool due to microscopic bristles on the wool fibers.

      Anti-Microbial & Anti-Bacterial
Amazingly, wool resists bacteria. It’s actually both antimicrobial and antibacterial.

      Naturally Fire Resistant
Wool is fire resistant, providing a safe sleeping environment. Wool does not catch on fire and actually acts as a natural fire retardant.

      A Renewable Resource, From Sheep
Unlike bedding that uses plucked down feathers, a sheep grows a coat of wool annually and is not harmed during shearing (it’s like getting a haircut).

      Supports Small Farms And Farmers
Wool is a sustainable product and helps small farmers make a living.

      Sustainable And Lasting
With proper care, your woollen bedding can last for decades.

It Stays In Place In Your Bedding
Wool batting, being one continuous piece, stays in place in our products and is hand-tufted to further secure it. This is unlike down bedding which shifts over time and creates bare spots in a comforter.

      Certifications & Testing

Green America - Gold Certified Business since 2007

Green America is a national, non-profit founded in 1982. (They went by the name "Co-op America" until 2009). America's Green Business Certification ensures companies operate according to a “values-based” social enterprise according to principles of social justice and environmental sustainability. In addition, certified businesses must be environmentally responsible in the way they run their operations and facilities, and in how they source raw materials, manufacture products, and market them. The Gold certification is completed by the Green America Standards Committee through an independent review.

Holy Lamb Organics holds the Gold Certification

We have exceeded the operation standards, in addition to the standards - specific to the textile industry - for sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, and marketing our goods.

The IOAS is a non-profit certification organization dedicated to the integrity of eco label claims in the field of organic and sustainable agriculture, environmental management, social justice and fair trade.

They work internationally to assess the competence of organizations providing certification to "sustainability" standards, meaning producers can work in a fair environment and consumers can trust the products bearing these labels and the company's contribution to a more sustainable and fairer world.

IAOS's role is as an independent technical expert. It verifies correct application of the standard and the requirements for certification.

All COTTON used at Holy Lamb Organics is IOAS certified.

Eco Wool is produced to the highest standards on local American farms; some of these standards are beyond those specified for organic materials. Eco Wool is not certified organic. At this time very little organic wool is available on the market; almost no organic wool is grown in the United States.

We have access to organic wool from New Zealand that is pure and clean, though due to it being only one type of wool, it doesn’t offer the kind of resilience or bounce that our Premium Eco Wool does.  Our Eco Wool is a blend of about 7 different types of wool varying from fine to coarse in order to create the most ideal wool fiber for use in bedding.

      Our WOOL is Premium Eco-Wool.

Though not required by law, our mill has these materials tested anyways to provide you with the assurance as to the quality of our raw materials.

      Element Materials Technology Tested

All materials at Holy Lamb Organics that have a "next to skin" use are run through a voluntary Phthalates test (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act CPSIA of 2008). This test is required by law and provides an extra assurance as to the quality of our natural materials.

All of our toppers and mattresses are required to meet the cigarette burn test 1633. Our verification is printed on all of our sewn-in product labels: "This Product Complies with the Federal Flammability Standard 16 CFR part 1632".
