DON'T THROW IT AWAY: Suggestions on recycling your natural bedding Many years down the road, your beloved Holy Lamb Organics natural bedding will begin to deteriorate back to the earth. We are encouraging you to do just that instead of throwing it in the landfill. Even when your bedding is ready to retire- it is still has many wonderful uses and we hope that it will be seen as a great resource.
First, we must recognize that the organic cotton and wool product that you have took a lot of energy to become its current state. From growing the cotton to spinning, weaving, shipping. From raising the sheep, shearing, washing, carding, and milling it into batting. Then the serging, stuffing, tufting and shipping it to you. Wow, that's a lot of embodied energy investment. What a shame for such a product at the end of it's life to end up with the plastic and discarded uselessness of a landfill. Here are some great alternative suggestions to the dump. For Fabric Products (i.e. sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers....) 1. Cut it into scrap pieces and incorporate into a patchwork quilt. 2. Make curtains. 3. Rip fabric into small shreds and through it into a long term compost. Take scissors and make a small slit every few inches. Grasp fabric firmly with both hand and just rip it to shreads. 4. Use the fabric for a costume. Experiment with natural dyes to change it to different colors. 5. Use as a paint drop-cloth For Wool & Fabric Products (i.e. comforters, pillows) 6. Pet Beds: pass on your beloved bedding to your beloved pet. Cats and dogs are very attracted to wool bedding. There have an intuitive feeling that upon this wool bedding is the perfect resting spot. See, they already can sense what is best for them! It takes us humans a little longer. If you have a comforter or mattress top, fold it in half and then in half again then sew up the edges. This will make a perfect dog bed. For a pillow, do nothing, it will make a perfect size cat or small dog bed. For a body pillow, just cut in half. 7. Mulch it. Do you have an area in your landscape that you need to start over? Many people use black plastic or a landscape "fabric" mesh to put on top of problematic weeds. Instead of putting these plastics in the ground that will eventually pollute your landscape, try laying down a comforter or mattress top. Just mulch it! Doesn't that sound fun. You can even create a whole new bed where there used to be grass. Cut the comforter to the shape of the area to be covered. Lay down the comforter. If you already have a landscape design with trees and shrubs it is best to map these out right now with flags. Underneath each flag. Cut a large X with scissors. This will give you an easy place to plant your tree or shrub. Then cover this area with about 6" of a good top soil or compost mix. Plant away. Smaller perennials and annuals will have enough soil on top to establish a root base. And as the fabric breaks down they will be able to go deeper as the plant matures in age. Voila, a whole new plant bed! Doesn't that feel good! 8. For Felted Items: If, sadly enough, your comforter or topper was felted through machine agitation, try taking off the fabric cover and cutting up the felted wool into smaller pieces. It can be great as a bath mat, seat cushion, car cushion, pet bed, great for dollmaking and fun project ideas for kids to play with.
